Having examined the long-standing need for qualified professional staff and proposals for the establishment of a vocational school, the Minister of the Ministry of Physical Education of the People of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, dr Bujić, approved by the Minister of Education Magarašević, on July 18th, 1938, brought The Rulebook on the „One-year course for preparing teachers of physical education schools“. At the same time, „the Curriculum“, with 25 teaching subjects was envisaged, and was taught by the following teachers after the opening of the One-year course:

   Dr Alfred Ratislav Pihler was appointed the Manager of the One-year Course. The entrance examination was organized from 11th to 14th September 1938 and 51 students were admitted on the basis of the results achieved.

   The opening of the One-year course took place on the 15th of September 1938, in a small hall of Matica Sokolski Dom, Belgrade, 27 Deligradska Street, and it was in this building that the institution worked until 1968, changing names, years of studies and teaching programs. Milivoje Vuk Aračić, head of the People's Ministry of Physical Education, on the invitations to the ceremony wrote: The official opening of the School for Physical Education.

   The school worked two semesters, and final exams were conducted from June 25th to July 17th, 1939, after which the majority of 49 participants who completed the course were assigned to secondary and teacher training schools as PE teachers.

School for Physical Education

   Recognizing the need to expand the vocational training program for teachers, the Minister of the People's Ministry of Physical Education, during the first year of the One-Year Course, prescribed the „Decree on the School for Physical Education“, on the 24th March, 1939. Based on the Decision of the Ministerial Council, the School for Physical Education, was established with its seat in Belgrade. Milivoje Vuk Aračić was appointed Acting Rector of the School for Physical Education.

   The curriculum envisaged 30 teaching subjects, and the School had the status of a vocational school in the ranks of several pedagogical schools and had the following tasks:

• to train PE teachers for all schools as well as experts for certain branches of physical education,
• to perform professional and scientific research in the field of physical education and to use the obtained results to improve the system and method of physical education.

   In 1939/40 school year, another seven teachers were employed: Selimir Radovanović, Miloš Nišavić, Marija Nišavić, Ljerka Sondić, Vanda Stevanović, Dragoš Stevanović and Ljudmila Fetisova. 33 male and 25 female students were enrolled.
   In the following 1940/41 school year 35 male and 21 female students were enrolled. However, the beginning of the World War II and the immediate war danger, which threatened the Kingdom of Yugoslavia forced the Minister of Physical Education to decide to dissolve the School of Physical Education, on March 31st 1941. The April war of 1941 against the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and its occupation, ended the regular education of students of physical education, but the work of the School was not terminated, as the School for Physical Education continued to exist administratively.

Organizing the „Physical Education Courses“

   Twenty days after the liberation of Belgrade (November 11th, 1944), School for Physical Education, continued its work, gathering teachers and preparing for the organization of „physical education courses“. Teachers of the School organized the first course, regardless of the ongoing Second World War in Yugoslavia.
   The first course was held from March 1st - 16th, 1945 and it was attended by 69 participants. After the liberation of Yugoslavia and the end of World War II, in the course of 1945, two other courses of that kind were organized: the second course, attended by 60 participants, lasted from June 14th to 24th, 1945, the third course lasted from July 20th, till August 28th and was attended by one hundred participants.

Continuation of the „School of Physical Education“

   The Ministry of Education of the Democratic Federative Yugoslavia made the decision on the establishment of the One-Year Higher Course and delivered it to the Rector of the School on July 18th, 1945. Reduction of the duration of the studies for one year resulted from a great and urgent need for faster training of the necessary professional staff in the field of physical culture. On July 19th, 1945, they sent an announcement for enrolment of participants to this course.
   During August and September, the entrance exam was held and started in the school year 1945/46, for which the definitive curriculum was adopted at the beginning of the October, followed by the „Instructions for internal work“ and „Decision on admitting 61 candidates for regular school attendants of the School for Physical Education“. In October and November another 11 plus three students were admitted, so the total number of students was 75.
   Most of the teachers who taught in this school year were teachers from 1938 and 1939 (B. Polič, V. Smodlaka, J. Kavčić, M. Nišavić, M. Šepa, S. Radovanović, V. Stevanović, D. Stevanović), but the new ones were also employed (Olga Skovran, dr Radmilo Anastasijević, Živojin Jovanović, Zoran Žujović, Stevan Englbreht, Kosta Popović).

   In its eighty-year-long existence, the Faculty has undergone different developmental phases, changing years of studies, curricula and names, consequently to become an institution worthy of admiration and respect.
